Catching a low tide and a kitchen experiment....
Tide and time were good today, so headed to a local beach...that's abundant with seaweed on clean shores!
It's the lowest tide I've seen so far here. Fantastic!, so much to see in such a short window on the low tide mark!
I had the idea to try to make something delicious from what I gathered....which was; Winkles, Kelp, Carrageen, Pepper Dulse, Sea Lettuce, Gutweed, Sea Beet ....and some sea water in a water bottle (for salt)
Here's what I did-
I divided the seawater into two pans, chopped up some Kelp and made two batches of broth by simmering for 1/2 hour. One I cooked the Winkles in for 10 minutes, drained and let them cool.
Tasting the other broth, it was delicious (but way too salty, so had to dilute this with some water). I added Carrageen to this to thicken up the broth. Then let that cool.
The Winkles were picked out of there shells and chopped with some Pepper Dulse, which when it's fresh tastes like a cross between garlic and truffles!
I blended a bunch more Pepper Dulse, with the Kelp broth, then added some of that to the chopped Whelks! Really delicious (if still a little salty). The Gutweed (a terrible name that needs addressing! ) & Sea Lettuce were crisped up in a hot pan.
So served up the Winkles & Pepper Dulse on some sourdough bread, with some sliced Sea Beet, sprinkled with the crispy sea greens! Very Tasty! and all very common ingredients if you find the right place
